Coconut oil can now be found in many kitchens and is considered a healthy alternative to conventional oils. But what is behind the hype surrounding tropical oil and is it really as healthy as is often claimed?

Coconut oil is considered a healthy superfood, is touted to strengthen the heart and circulation, and is even said to help with weight loss. Coconut oil is extracted from the flesh of the coconut, which is found in many tropical regions. The oil consists mainly of saturated fat and contains high levels of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which are processed differently by the body than other fats.

The question of how healthy coconut oil is is controversial. On the one hand, the oil actually contains healthy ingredients such as MCT and antioxidants. On the other hand, the high proportion of saturated fatty acids is controversial, as these are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Due to its high smoke point, coconut oil is particularly suitable for frying and baking. It gives dishes an exotic taste and, due to its composition, has a longer shelf life than other oils.

Coconut Oil: Numerous Benefits

Apart from the fact that coconut oil can be used to prepare delicious desserts, hearty dishes, and more, the oil offers other advantages:

Whitening teeth, strengthening the immune system

For example, you can use coconut oil to lighten slight discoloration of the teeth. To do this, rinse your mouth once a day (preferably after getting up) with about a teaspoon of the oil for 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can also put some of the oil, which is solid at room temperature, on your toothbrush and brush with it. However, this is not an alternative to brushing your teeth. The so-called oil pulling should also strengthen the immune system. However, this thesis has not yet been scientifically and medically proven.

Harmless protection against ticks for humans and animals

As soon as it warms up again outside after winter, the tick season begins. For protection, there are numerous chemical sprays that keep the little bloodsuckers away. Coconut oil has the same effect. The lauric acid it contains also deters ticks. As a German study shows, between 81 and 100 percent of ticks dropped from the test surface covered with a lauric acid solution. For comparison: A ten percent lauric acid solution was used in the test. Coconut oil contains up to 50 percent of the acid. The results even exceed those of synthetic repellent sprays, making coconut oil a particularly effective and harmless protection.

Skin, make-up, hair

Coconut oil is also suitable for removing makeup. To do this, let a small amount of the oil melt in your hands and then massage it in so that the makeup dissolves. Mascara and other eye makeup can also be removed in this way. Then wipe off with a washcloth or cloth. If you want, you can also use some coconut oil as a face mask or in the ends of your hair overnight.

IMPORTANT: You should never pour oil down the drain or toilet. Instead, you should dispose of it in the trash with a cloth. Fats are not water soluble, can clog drains, and attract rats. Since coconut oil already solidifies at room temperature, there is an additional risk of clogging the drain pipe.
